“Energy is a limited resource”

Ramona Wunderlin, why is energy such a fleeting commodity?

Energy is a limited resource, just like the earth’s water supplies. It’s our most precious commodity. If you suddenly need a lot of energy, you’ll find your reserves are soon empty and your body needs time to replenish them – a phase of regeneration.

What factors influence our energy levels?

Energy levels are influenced by a combination of physical and mental factors. Stressful situations – or more accurately situations that trigger stress – rob the body of a lot of energy, especially if you’re confronted by one stressful situation after another. Another influencing factor is your personal performance curve. At any given moment not everyone will be able to put in the same performance. This means it makes sense to structure your day so that you’re able to use the peaks to tackle challenging tasks and the recovery phases for less demanding work.

Does this mean we have the ability to manage our own energy levels?

Absolutely. What’s important is to ration your energy and live mindfully, not simply functioning on autopilot, but taking care not to waste too much energy on individual situations. You also have to eat and sleep properly to make sure your body gets the necessary energy.

Can mental coaching help get more energy?

Mental coaching can help you cope with situations that require a lot of energy. But using mental training to keep your physical energy levels up for longer can be problematic, as you override your body’s need for recuperation.

Is it possible to push beyond your personal capabilities?

It’s possible for short periods, but it’s neither sensible nor healthy to do so for longer. If you ignore the limits of your own resources for a protracted period it can lead to exhaustion.

Does this mean we have to accept we don’t always have the same levels of energy?

Genau!
